FBI: Open Investigation into San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Hacking Case

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a U.S. law enforcement agency, has agreed for communicating openly with the SFMTA personnel in regards with the incident of accidently downloading a ransomware (a malware form where the hacker steals the stored data and demand ransom to make it available for use) in the Muni’s computer systems by the SFMTA employee. It is informed that the attacker has demanded a ransom of $73,000 for the stolen data and SFMTA has refused to pay and more than 2000 SFMTA computers were compromised.

According to cyber crime journalist and blogger Brian Krebs there is a new hacker, identified as a pseudonym Nick Maxxwell has hacked the SFTMA’s hacker’s computer system. Maxxwell provided several screenshots of SFTMA Examiner’s correspondence with the original hacker as a proof that he hacked the original hacker’s system by taking over the original hacker’s email account.

Krebs also informed that original hacker was done by common hacking pseudonym Andy Saolis and this pseudonym has ransomed many organization’s data and earn upto $140,000 by doing such frauds.

SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose has confirmed that SFMTA has never thought of paying the ransom and also assures that they have a staff which is highly qualified and capable to recover all the systems.
