On Sunday, the kiosks of railway station in SF went back online after two days of interrupted ticketing service & free rides for travelers. And on Monday, the hackers were threatening to leak the 30GB confidential data about employees and customers which they had stolen from the Municipal Railway of San Francisco.
The hackers warned that they will leak this information if the agency failed to solve and fix its vulnerable systems by Friday. They sent a message saying “I show you later if you don’t contact us”. The Municipal Transportation Agency of San Francisco did not reply to Fortune request for that comment. They wanted to sort this issue in any other way.
According to the San Francisco Examiner, Paul Rose who is a spokesperson of the agency said, “There is an ongoing investigation and it wouldn’t be appropriate to provide additional details”.
What happened
On Friday afternoon, the ticketing machines of the San Francisco railway received a message “You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted”. This was just a ransomware attack. The message contained an email address crypton27@yandex.com, urged people to contact the person for a key. This key is an encryption tool that can code and decode your data. These keys are used by hackers to lock the important document files of people and then force them to reclaim access.
According to the report, in this case, the hackers demanded 100 Bitcoins which is approx $73,000.
