Improved bike lanes in San Francisco after a serious bike crash happened in June

After a serious bike crash that took place on June, 22nd in which a bicyclist named Kate Slattery was killed, many transit improvements have been made in the city including parking protected bike lane. The improvements along Seventh and Eighth streets were approved after the voting of Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors of the city.

But a serious issue has occurred when the topic of a change to the 19-Polk bus line started surfacing. This improvement directly affects the only bus stop of the Main Library of San Francisco. While SFMTA board members approved the removal of 19-Polk bus stop on the same hand, Thomas Fortin who is the chief of main library is against this decision.

In a conference, he said, “The response we’ve heard is overwhelming against the movement of the bus stop. We’ve heard from our blind and low vision users and those with mobility disabilities, who benefit greatly from the current stop to the primary entrance”.

On the same point, Peter Warfield who is the Executive Director of the Library Users Association said, “There has been no consideration of the 33,000 visitors per year to the main library’s special collections for the deaf and blind.” He also said that many of those patrons rely on the 19-Polk.
