If you’re using public transport in San Francisco to reduce the carbon footprint, here is a good new for you. San Francisco’s BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is going to get greener to reduce the pollution level as much they can. All the credit to make the Bart system greener goes to newly approved Wholesale Electricity Portfolio Policy.
On this, BART director Nick Josefowitz said, “Every day, BART takes cars off the road and helps drive down our greenhouse gas emissions. But especially now, BART and the Bay Area must shoulder even more responsibility to combat climate change. Even though BART is not required to comply with the state’s renewable energy standards, we have committed to purchasing 100 percent renewable electricity and taking a leadership role in decarbonizing our transportation sector.”
The renewable energy sources such as the wind, solar, and small hydroelectric facilities are the clean portfolio in terms of BART power sources. All such energy sources are environmentally friendly. The motive is that by 2025, the BART will produce its power from minimum 50 percent eligible renewable sources and from at least 90 percent zero and low carbon sources.
Thus, BART is the very first electrified public transit system going to make 100 percent renewable power pledge. And most probably, it will set a precedent that transport agencies across the world can match.
